In this context, we're pleased to introduce the story of Kim Ireland, who specialises in nuclear forensics through laboratory work and project coordination. Q1. Tell us a bit about your career journey
After completing my Bachelor&rsquo;s in Forensic Science, I began my career in Waste Water Management company as a laboratory technician. This opportunity was great for my first real-world laboratory experience and introduction to the professional workforce. From there, my career has taken me through many different scientific disciplines, such as pharmaceuticals, haematology, molecular diagnostics and nuclear science, which I feel has provided me with such a wide range of scientific skills and knowledge, as well as experience in the many different facets of the science industry.
As my career progressed, I had the opportunity to take on team leader and lab manager roles, which piqued my interest in exploring new career paths. This led me to pursue an MBA, followed by a Master's in Medical Science, to broaden my career opportunities within the industry. I looked to transition into more project management roles, later securing a role as project coordinator at a molecular diagnostic company, another opportunity where I learnt so much and gained many new skills.
Despite having my heart set on continuing down that path I always kept an eye out for potential roles in forensic science, so when the opportunity to work in Nuclear Forensics at ANSTO came up, that combined both laboratory work and project coordination, I jumped at it.
Q2. What motivated you to pursue a career in science?
I have been interested in science and medicine for as long as I can remember. With both of my parents being professionals in the medical science field, our household was always filled with scientific discussions. I always admired the vast scientific and medical knowledge they have and feel it&rsquo;s something that really inspired me to take up a career in science.
This interest was further cemented during my high school years, working in the labs at school and doing experiments further solidified my determination to pursue a career in science. I also must give credit to shows like CSI, NCIS and MythBusters, these played a considerable role in fuelling my passion for laboratory work and investigative science.
Q3. Reflect on your experience working in the scientific field - what aspects do you find most enjoyable and fulfilling?
For me, the most enjoyable aspects of working in the field of science are working in the laboratory and leading a team. I find immense satisfaction in problem-solving and uncovering answers through experimentation and research. The dynamic and collaborative environment of the laboratory, combined with the responsibility of leadership, is particularly fulfilling and enjoyable for me.
Also, I would like to highlight the people aspect. The camaraderie within the scientific community and the people you meet along the way are amazing and contribute significantly to having an enjoyable career.
Q4. If you could offer advice to the next generation of women considering a career in science - what would it be?
The opportunities within science are endless and will allow you to branch out and pursue multiple avenues that are both challenging and rewarding.
Always do what you&rsquo;re passionate about and keep your mind open to opportunities that may not be exactly what you had planned for, as there is so much more to the science industry than you think.

Q1. Tell us a bit about your career journey
I studied Food Science and Nutrition. After I finished my degree, I landed a casual role as a Laboratory Technician in a dairy manufacturing facility through Evolve. After this, I became permanent as a Quality Assurance Technician for 3.5 years and then moved through various quality roles in the company - Factory Hygiene Coordinator, Quality &amp; Environment Systems Coordinator and then Technical Team Leader leading a team of 5 lab-based members. After 7.5 years with this company, I decided on a new challenge and moved to a Quality Coordinator role in a meat manufacturer where I am currently based.
Q2. What motivated you to pursue a career in science?
I liked science subjects in high school, such as Chemistry and Food Technology, and thought I would combine the two in the Food Science sector.
Q3. Reflect on your experience working in the scientific field - what aspects do you find most enjoyable and fulfilling?
I enjoy the challenges of food science and also quality control where I can see a change in the factory environment and quality of the food I love.

Give it a go! There are lots of different opportunities in the Science industry and every day can be different and interesting.

 Although there have been advancements in providing opportunities for women in the engineering industry, there is still a significant amount of work to be done regarding job prospects, career advancement, representation in senior leadership roles, and equal pay on a global scale.&nbsp;
 Fortunately, more and more companies are taking steps to bridge these gaps, resulting in increasing opportunities for women to be included. Moreover, women who are already working in the industry are leading the way and serving as role models for others to follow.
 Recently, we had the privilege of speaking to Haylee Nguyen, Process Engineer, about her personal experience in the field and how she entered the industry. Additionally, she shared some noteworthy highlights from her journey so far and offered valuable advice for aspiring women engineers on how to kickstart their careers in this field.

Q: Let's start with your career journey first. What did that look like? What brought you into the industry? Despite graduating with First Class Honours, I faced challenges securing a job during the COVID period and visa restrictions. With the support from Evolve, I have kicked starting my career as a Lab Technician at Adbri. This opportunity provided valuable exposure to the workforce and insights into the production process. I then transitioned to a role as a data analyst at a project management consultancy, enhancing my skills in project management frameworks and data handling. Despite the enriching nature of the work, my passion for process engineering persisted. I then saw a job ad from Adbri for a graduate process engineer position, without hesitation, I applied. Beside my experience and academic knowledge, the familiarity with the company and positive internal played a pivotal role in helping me secure the position. I've been thoroughly enjoying my current role, where I find joy in learning something new every day and contributing to the dynamic work environment.

Q: What was your motivation for pursuing a Bachelor of Chemical Engineering?&nbsp; l always had a keen interest in understanding how things work and as a kid, I enjoyed taking apart gadgets to learn their mechanisms. During high school, I also excelled in science subjects, particularly Maths and Chemistry, which drove me to pursue a Bachelor of Chemical Engineering.

Q: What has been your perception of the engineering industry so far, from your experience?&nbsp; Engineering is a journey of continuous learning and skill development. Each day presents new challenges to solve, making it an exciting field for those who love problem solving and science. Working on-site is also something I enjoy, it allows me to witness machine designs from inside out, offering a profound understanding of their workings.

Q: What advice would you give women who want to become engineers in the future, or are looking at making that step now?&nbsp; My advice to aspiring women engineers is to believe in themselves, willing to take challenges, and remain persistent, focused, and proud of their work. Learning from others and seeking a career mentor, especially in the early stages, can be transformative. The guidance of a mentor surpasses the benefits of a high-paying job, providing invaluable support and insights.
