About the Role We are recruiting a
Scientific Assistant (OO3) for a state government client operating within the scientific and occupational hygiene sector. This role supports the Occupational Hygiene, Environment and Chemistry Centre laboratory and is a casual position working up to 4 days per week.
Reporting to the
Principal Scientist, the Scientific Assistant will provide essential scientific and technical support to the Analytical Services Team, with a strong focus on sample registration, sample preparation and dust analysis activities. This is a hands‑on laboratory role suited to someone who can step in quickly and manage high‑volume workflows.
Duties and responsibilities:- Receive and register laboratory samples for analysis
- Prepare samples for analysis, including opening hygiene cassettes
- Prepare filters and assemble occupational hygiene sampling equipment
- Conduct dust deposition and gravimetric post‑weighing analysis
- Assist chemists with routine sample preparation
- Manage laboratory consumables for dust analysis activities
- Maintain accurate documentation and reporting
- Perform laboratory cleaning and housekeeping
- Meet strict turnaround times and customer commitments
- Follow safety procedures and promote a safe laboratory environment
Skills & Experience:- Certificate III or IV in Laboratory Techniques or equivalent experience working in a laboratory environment
- Demonstrated experience with sample management, sample preparation and laboratory processes
- High attention to detail with strong organisational and time‑management skills
- Ability to work effectively during periods of high sample volumes
- Understanding laboratory documentation, record keeping and quality requirements
- A proactive, reliable and safety‑focused approach to work
